UL PU TODAY: Now University Library of Prešov University (UL PU) is a library-information, bibliographic, coordinative and advisory department of the University. It consists of 3 branches:
UL
PU serves for more then 10.500 users (students and the university staff).
UL PU has more than 290.000 volumes of the books, it subscribes more
then 360 titles of Slovak and foreign journals. Together it makes more
then 9.000 year sets of periodicals. UL
PU has been using automated library system ALEPH 500 since 1999. UL PU
has acquired this system thanks to grant project KOLIN (KOšice Library and
Information Network), financed by Mellon foundation (USA).
Implementation of this system moves the library to the new, higher
level of the quality. It reflects mostly in efectivity of services and
productivity of the work. UL
PU provides standard library-information services to its users.
Besides the most used circulation services, bibliography and
information services comes to the center of the interest last years.
They provides searches from internal sources as well as from external
database centers.
Of course, consultory and reprographic services are provided, too.
Library realises also lectures and trainings, aimed to propagation and
using of information technologies in library. Computerised
processing of publication activities of the University staff is a very
appreciated activity. UL PU has been realising it in the system Rapid
Library EPC since 1998. This is connected with yearly
publishing of printed bibliography, which is very popular here at our
University, but also among other unversities staff. Library regularly organises seminars for specialists, openings of artistic works, exhibitions, presentations of the new books and other actions, which diversify its activities. University
Library of PU is a member
of many Slovak and foreign proffesional organizations and associations
(Associations of Slovak Librarians, Slovak Association of Libraries,
Consortium KOLIN, ICAU,...). Library is participating on realization
of some grant projects (KOLIN, TEMPUS, PROLIB,
MALIB, ProScientia,..). UL PU has also a lot of
problems. It has a space
problem for a long time and also a problem with unadaquate quantity of relevant
information sources because of growing nuber of students. We try to
solve these problems and we hope, that we will succeed. The Conception
of Development of University Library of PU, prepared by Board of
Rector in May 2002, helps us very much. This Conception is based on
the following bases:
