HISTORY of UL PU:

The history of the foundation and develpoment of the academic Library is connected with the existence of colleges with the orientation on humanities in this region. We consider the year 1949 as the foundation year of the Library. It was The Library of the Branch of the Pedagogical Faculty of Slovak University (PF SU) in Kočice.

  This is the record of the first item of the library (©ejmen, M. M.: Vatikan 1948). It is dated 22.7.1949 in inventory list.
In 1952 was the Branch of PF SU transferred from Kočice to Prečov. So the Library was moved completely to this town.


In 1953 The Higher Peadagogic School was created on the bases of the branch of PF SU. The Library have changed its title to The Library of the Higher Pedagogic School in Prečov. It also served also for Philological Faculty of Pedagogic University in Bratislava, that was created in Prečov by the same time.
The Library was placed in the center of the town, in the building on Hlavná street 22, which is the historical building, known as the Castle of Klobushicky family.


In 1959 The Higher Peadagogic School is transformed to Pedagogic Institute and the title of the Library has changed to: The Library of the Pedagigic Institute in Prečov. In the same year the Philosophical faculty was founded on the bases of Philological Faculty of Pedagogic University. Philosophical faculty in Prečov together with the Medical faculty in Kočice were the base of the Unviersity of Pavol Jozef ©afárik in Kočice. In 1964 The Pedagogic Institute was transformed into Pedagogical Faculty, which became the part of UPJ© in Kočice. The Library has changed its name to: The Central Library of the Philosophical and Pedagogical Faculties in Prečov. This Library had about 240,000 of items of books and 500 titles of periodicals in its stock. It had 10 librarians.

On the bases of three faculty libraries was in 1973 created the Central Library of the UPJ© in Kočice. This Library was the branch of that Central Library. It was managed by the director of The Central Library and by his deputy in Prečov. The Library was specific by the individuality of the stock, registration, processing of books and serving for its customers.
The year 1984 was very important for the Library. In this year the budilding of the University Campus for Prečov faculties was finished. The part of the complex was the Library.


In 1990 UPJ© was extended by the twoo new faculties in Prečov: Russian Orthodox Theological Faculty and Greek-Catholic Theological Faculty. The Library was extended by these twoo branch libraries, too.

In 1991 was the Library renamed to University Library of UPJ©, branch in Prečov.

After dividing the University of Pavol Jozef ©afárik in Kočice into twoo universities in 1997, the Library received its nowadays name: University Library of Prečov University in Prečov. The Library had 300,000 items of books and 11,000 titles of periodicals in its stock. It had 14 librarians.
